Epson PictureMate Dash PM260 Compact Photo Inkjet Printer (C11C694201)

This product is poor quality. We purchased it because we didn’t want to have to go to the store to develop pictures now that we’re all digital. We printed about 60 pictures on the Epson PictureMate personal photo lab Model PM260, and then it never printed a decent picture again.

Our pictures became streaked with lines, missing pigments, and grainy. We cleaned and cleaned the device, we aligned nozzles, we used every feature available in the device to try and improve the pictures that were coming out, but ultimately, the thing just a piece of junk. I recommend you not waste money on this product. Services like Shutterfly (which we use now that we’ve been burned by EPSON a few times) work just fine.

Additionally, there is a racket with picture printers that if you buy this product will no doubt drive you insane. You will eventually need more ink, but you’ll have a TON of photo paper. EPSON forces you to buy expensive combo packs that have paper and ink in it, when you don’t need it. Your only other option is to buy third-party, cheaply made ink cartridges that defeat the entire original purpose of using a photo lab at home.

Don’t buy this product!

I received this printer for Christmas, and I absolutely love it! The quality of the pictures is great! I like the fact that I can print out the pictures in my craft room, instead of having to do it from our office printer ….I use it all the time when I’m scrapping! The other thing I love is the ability to print different sizes (ex. 2 jumbo wallets, or 4 wallets)on the 4X6 photo paper! I would definitely recommend this portable printer to others!

I had an older Picturemate (at least 5 years old) which I liked but had not used in a while because it was a little fussy to use. We did a fundraising dinner at church and wanted to use the printer to offer pictures..so I said I would donate the paper, ink, etc. Decided to upgrade and got the new one and BOY things have sure improved in 5 years! Much faster, better picture quality, and sooooo much easier to use! Everyone raved at the photos and we raised $250 (at $5 a picture) for the church music ministry! Only problem–what do I do with the old one!!!!

  • 3 Nickoloff

This is a great little photo printer. The prints are truly exceptional & economical, it’s very easy to use.

  • 4 Keck

The Epson Picture Mate is a great value for the money. I looked at many different photo printers, and they got it right. The ease of use and features provided are excellent. The photo quality is great and, what I am most impressed with it how it is self-contained. I could take this anywhere and print directly from many different types of media storage.

What I was a little dissapointed with was that there was no printer cable with it, but given the price I got over it quickly. Also if you’re going to be printing a great deal of photos at once you need to watch closely that the printer heads don’t get dirty and reduce the photo quality. It has a self-cleaning feature, but I needed to use it after about 30 photos and it took six cleaning cycles to get it clean.

This is a wonderful accessory to have. It snaps together great, and it is fairly easy to remove, more so than other hard cases. It offers great protection. The only thing that could be better is that it could have a hard plastic cover over the screen, since the dash is not a touch screen device. I had to buy a seperate screen protector. Also, when this product arrived at my door, it was shipped without the belt clip.

The shipping was vPalm Treo 750 / 755p AlloyVision - The Crystal Metal Case (Black)ery quick

  • 7 Oakley

This a great item for your dash as far as protection and carrying convenience. My only issue is that it frequently came out of the snap on case.I taped in on and have had no problems! good item!

  • 8 Ottaviano

The clip broke apart, but I am reordering this. Why? Because it seems that all the cases in this category aren’t too reliable adn I like the clip swivel lock on this model. Clear is nice too–it looks less bulky.

The holster clip on this blew apart when it was streched opened. This is not the first time this has happened to me with this clip design.

If you sit down sometime and your case bottom catches the car arm-res. like a lever, it will pry the clip beyond its breaking point and boom-snap out shoots the spring and a broken piece of plastic. Afterward, The case becomes a skin (not holsterable).

If you remember to twist the case horizontally this wont happen. The swivel clip will lock horizontally which I’ve discovered is a key feature for swivel clips. Hopefully I’ll remember this with my next case.

If it were better engineered it could fall apart gracefully or have a 2 way hinge (like a screen door). I’m guessing this sort of engineering isn’t available as I can’t find it anywhere.

The case fits tightly to the phone and looks great. I didn’t like the slick surface, though. It made the phone kind of hard to grip, especially when compared to the rubberized finish on the Dash.

The main issue I have with it, though, is how hard it is to remove. Seeing how this is a *Windows* smartphone, after all. LOL Every time I found the need to do a hard reset by removing my phone’s battery or needed access to the micro-SD card, it was a pain to remove the case.

I decided I needed easier entry to the phone and removed this shell case.

On the plus side, it did survive being removed and replaced numerous times and I could still use it to this day — So, it is not fragile! As a matter of fact, when the phone’s been dropped, that case broke open, but was unharmed — as was the phone.

If you’re not a tweaker like I am, you may not have trouble with your phone and need to remove the battery. And you might like the slick feeling of this case. If so, go for it!

Please forgive me upfront. This is a long rant. If you don’t want to read about my disappointment with the DE feel free to skip this post. Also, I’m not a good writer and I’ll be jumping around a lot. I’m frustrated so bear with me…

When I first saw a demo video that highlighted what the Dash was capable of I was instantly hooked. I Really wanted one. A internet connected GPS with RSS and real time traffic! Swwwweet! But now that I’ve had one for a while I’m not impressed. I really, reallly, REALLY want to like my DE but it really is a piece of junk.

First, the unit takes FOREVER to boot up. Forerever is more realistically between 3-5 minutes. It wouldn’t bother me all that much if the battery would hold a charge for more than 5 minutes. I take the DE off of the mount and hide it in the car when I arrive at my destination. I make sure that the DE shuts off instead of “continuing” after the power has been lost. Even still the next time I dock the DE the device has a completely dead battery. I have to wait several minutes after docking and then hold down the power switch to turn the DE on again. Doing this EVERY time I get in the car is very, very annoying. But it doesn’t stop there. It takes at least another 3-7 minutes to find a connection. It doesn’t matter where I’m at the result is the same. Why is this when there are 3 radio’s? I don’t go outside of the Portland metro area very often and as such there is ALWAYS cell coverage, wifi or both. My iPhone always has full 3G coverage and also picks up several WiFi connections that the DE ignores. Eventually the DE connects but why does it take so long? The total (boot up + connection) time before the DE is usable can be anywhere between 4-8 minutes. My Tivo (which uses strangely similar boot screens) loads up faster than my DE. (And my TivoHD takes a long time to boot too)

The routing is truly terrible. I live in the Portland, Oregon metro area. 8 out of 10 times the DE gets me lost instead of to my destination. My fiances built in GPS system in her Jetta is DVD based and hasn’t been updated in over 2 years yet it manages to get us to our destination EVERY time.

Listen up Dash team. I don’t care if the DE is internet connected, has RSS, can tweet my location to my friends, etc if it CANT GET ME TO MY INTENDED DESTINATION! I get LOST very frequently when following the turn-by-turn direction provided by my DE. Above all it IS a GPS right? I paid good money for the DE and I also pay a monthly fee. As such I expect a superior experience especially against non-connected STOCK GPS systems. That, however seems to be asking too much. What a total let down.

The DE Voice for turn-by-turn is so bad that I turn it off and leave it off. Again the stock Jetta GPS voice in her car sounds amazing… not robotic at all. Many people would argue (and have) that its not a big deal. I’m here to tell you it is. The 80’s toy Speak-n-Spell sounds better than the dying cow coming from my DE. But the real kicker here is that it could be fixed so easily. ALLOW me to pick from several different voices. Male, Female, Celebrity, etc. I’d even be willing to pay an extra (one time) fee for this. The DE is ALREADY setup to deliver this and has had plenty of time to do so and has ignored the ringtone like profits.

My route has NEVER been determined by traffic. I have tried to get the DE to prompt me to take a different route because it detects heavy traffic ahead. What good is having the (supposedly real time) traffic info if the DE doesn’t make use of it? What good is providing 3 different routes if traffic isn’t one of the factors. I ALWAYS pick the first route as it seems to be the most practical.

Updates are too infrequent and communication from Dash has dropped to pretty much nothing. One of the best things about the DE is the ability to keep current. The Dash team doesn’t leverage this. The last thing I heard from the Dash team is that they are planning to license the Dash software to other platforms. That was months ago.

Now there are some amazing things happening with the iPhone. As of the 3.0 firmware update which lands this summer turn-by-turn applications will be officially allowed by Apple. iPhone application developers will be able to make a $10-$20 iPhone app that will make the DE look like something from the 80’s. Even if the Dash team makes an iPhone app it will very likely get lost in the flood of the 200 other turn-by-turn GPS iPhone apps. Good luck competing with that! Monthly service fee? iPhone users would laugh in your face. Most iPhone users aren’t willing to pay .99 cents for an app. So good luck trying to get them to pay $13 monthly. I’m using the iPhone as an example but other platforms such as Android pose just as big of a threat.

I’ve given the Dash team way too much of my money. I’ve been blindly paying the monthly fee hoping that things would get better. More frequent communication and DE updates would have kept me hopeful.

Yeah, I know the fan boys will say that’s the risk of being an early adopter. At this point that is nothing more than an excuse. This product has had more than enough time to bloom and it has done nothing.

I’ll be selling my DE for dirt cheap. If you are interested let me know I probably wont refuse even a low ball offer. Better that than it collect dust as a paper weight.

Sorry about all my bitching but I really had high hopes for this product and I’m sad about how it turned out.

The one thing about the DE that consistently worked and that I am still impressed with is the “Send to Car” feature. But i’m sure the iPhone apps will have the same feature and routing that actually works. And without a monthly service charge. One can only hope…

It basically doesn’t work. I bought it to tie into Trulia and look for real estate. It doesn’t do that. It pulls up a random subset of what’s on Trulia and it is cumbersome to use, it doesn’t remember any settings, no custom search functions, doesn’t find homes closest to you. I am REALLY disappointed with this unit.

  • 12 DiFilippo

I have been using hand-held GPS in my car(s) since 1995.

The Dash is my first ‘car’ Navigator, and it is far more useful than handhelds. I read lots of criticism about the Dash not being on a par with other brands of car Navigators. Maybe so. But it doesn’t impress me for one primary reason: when I need directional assistance to an unknown and unfamiliar destination, Dash has always come through with flying colors. It does what it is supposed to do.

Sure, I can often drive a more familiar and efficient route in my hometown; but so what? I don’t need directional assistance driving home from the grocery store.

Another reviewer noted that the ‘Internet’ connection didn’t work. OF COURSE IT DOES. I just grabbed my Dash, turned it on, and used the ‘Internet’ connection to [1] get my local temperature, [2] check my local gas prices, and [3] check FOX news headlines! (I also noted a green dashed line on Sunset Avenue that was sent to my Dash by Dash computers that keep track of such things.)

After fourteen years using GPS on the road and on trails, I can say with some authority: Thank you Dash for expanding my GPS universe.

And finally though, the venture capital funds supporting Dash are running thin, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find no Internet connection in six months or a year. Well, I wasn’t born yesterday (it was 70 years ago actually) and I jumped in with my eyes open; so far though, it’s been a good decision. And even if Dash-the-company shuts down, my Dash will still give me directional assistance to, as I said, an unknown and unfamiliar destination.

  • 13 Penne

The DASH is great idea that just does not work. It’s a second rate GPS lacking most of the features you would find in a $79 GPS. WORST PART: the company no longer supports the internet connected feature, which was the ONLY reason to buy it. The company won’t answer e-mails, and has stopped support for the unit. Mine is just 5 month old, and is essentially useless (and past the return window); I got ripped off, learn from me and buy a name brand like Magellan or Garmin.

Bought this from Amazon in March of 2008. Noticed all the strange routing problems that others have commented on. A little while ago, the touch screen stops responding entirely. For almost a month, I tried to call Dash for warranty repair, but there was no answer. The recorded message said that they’d be back “after Thanksgiving” - and this was still the case after Christmas. Finally I got in touch with them, and they refused to honor their (one year) warranty - they said I had to send it back to Amazon, even though our return window had expired 8 months ago. Some advice - DON’T buy this company’s products!
